This is a list of Africa’s countries, dependencies and nations, listed from the largest to the smallest in km2. It includes all land area and internal waters – in effect this is the data that is generally used for lists referred to as the ‘biggest countries‘ or ‘largest countries‘, as opposed to the ‘countries with the most land area‘. The data mainly comes from the United Nations’ (UN) Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), with some data included from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), plus other independent sources whenever necessary.

We have included data for Somaliland, a nation which is considered a disputed territory but is operating as defacto country, controlling most of it’s own affairs, with very little input from the country which – according to our governments, the UN and international organisations – administers it officially, Somalia. Somaliland data is generally not included within UN, FAO or CIA datasets.
