The Largest Countries in Europe

This is a list of Europe’s countries, dependencies and nations, listed from the largest to the smallest in km2. It includes all land area and internal waters – in effect this is the data that is generally used for lists referred to as the ‘biggest countries‘ or ‘largest countries‘, as opposed to the ‘countries with the most land area‘. The data mainly comes from the United Nations’ (UN) Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), with some data included from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), plus via some encyclopedia’s and other independent sources whenever necessary.

We have included some estimates – from various sources – for a bunch of nations which are disputed territories that are operating as defacto countries, controlling most of their own affairs, with very little input from the country which – according to our governments, the UN and international organisations – administers them officially.

These additional independent fully-operational nations include Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Northern Cyprus, Kosovo, South Ossetia and Transnistria – none of which are included within UN, FAO or CIA datasets, apart from some Northern Cyprus data appearing within the CIA World Factbook. The overall total for the country which officially administers them is included both with and without the disputed territory data.

There are also a handful of transcontinental nations in Europe, and all of them are also included in the chart below. This includes the top 3 largest countries in Europe – Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkey.
