Recommended Channel 4 Documentaries
This is a list of factual films which UK tv network Channel 4 has made available, to watch for free, on their 4OD Documentaries YouTube Channel. We have only included films which we have watched and recommend, and they can all be viewed in the United Kingdom & Ireland, but some films may have territorial restrictions for viewers in other countries.
Broadcasting since 1982, Channel 4 is the third biggest terrestrial tv network in the UK, after the BBC and ITV, and it is a 'Public Service Broadcaster', meaning it's output must be intended for the public benefit, rather than for purely commercial reasons. Channel 4 ultimately operates as a publicly-owned tv station, and, according to the station... "as a publisher-broadcaster, Channel 4 does not produce its own programmes but commissions them from more than 300 independent production companies across the UK, a far greater number than any other [UK] broadcaster, including the whole of the BBC".

Science & Nature
Tony Robinson presents this series, which investigates a series of natural disasters that have happened to our planet, and which have provided the platform for the kinds of life that now exists on Earth. It appears that we humans would not have evolved were it not for a collision with Earth's sister planet, other massive objects hitting Earth, violent eruptions from our planets interior, and an ice age which forced life to diversify.
Episode 1: Birth of the Planet 48 mins
Episode 2: Snowball Earth 48 mins
Episode 3: Planet of Fire 48 mins
Episode 4: Asteroid Strike 48 mins
Episode 5: Survival Earth 48 mins
George Carey investigates the massive explosion/event which shook a remote area of Siberia in 1908. It took decades for this story to gain relevance internationally, but it has become one of the big mystery's of our time. Did a UFO crash? Did a meteorite hit Earth? The remaining photographic evidence, and the little bit of damage which is still visible, certainly points to something quite unnatural, possibly nuclear.
During this thought-provoking series, some of the world's leading astronomers and cosmologists reveal extraordinary new discoveries about the shape and structure of the universe, and what lies beyond its edge. Episode 1 looks at the search for Earth-like planets, and part 2 examines the part asteroids and comets play in both kick-starting life, and in potential disasters. The final episode looks into the science of measuring the beginning - thought to be 15 billion years ago - and end times of our entire Universe.
Episode 1: Planets from Hell 49 mins
Episode 2: Killers in Space 50 mins
Episode 3: Final Frontier 49 mins

A look at the huge earthquake that devastated Haiti on 12 January 2010, examining what happened and why, using 3D graphics and location footage to pick apart the mechanics of the quake.
Twenty years after A Brief History of Time became an unlikely global bestseller, Professor Stephen Hawking takes viewers on a journey through the universe to explore the mysteries of our universe.
Richard Dawkins presents a guide to Charles Darwin and his masterpiece, On the Origin of Species. Despite a mountain of evidence, Darwin's evolution theory remains questioned by many, but as Dawkins points out... "a few hours in the science lab is no substitute for a lifetime of religious indoctrination". After examining the science behind evolution within the first episode, Dawkins then attempts to get to grips with the moral questions surrounding the evolution v's creation debate.
History
As far as our current pre-historic knowledge goes, the Roman Empire originally wrote much of the history relating to the periods covered by Bettany Hughes in this series. When the Empire eventually crumbled, the Vatican City took over, and continued to push the same storyline, but cracks are beginning to appear in our schoolbooks' heroic tales. Nowadays we know that Europe had an Islamic past, which helped to shape it, and we also know that 'barbarians' was just a term used by both Rome-based regimes (Roman Empire & The Vatican) to describe anybody who did not fit into their storyline. In many cases, the barbarian cultures were much more civilised, developed and humane than Rome itself, as we find out during this series.
Episode 1: The Minoans 98 mins
Episode 2: When the Moors Ruled in Europe 102 mins
Episode 3: Athens: The Truth about Democracy - Part 1 49 mins Part 2 48 mins
Episode 6: Helen of Troy 103 mins
Episode 7: The Spartans 142 mins
Francis Pryor argues that the early history of Britain was a vibrant period, when the island's civilisation thrived under foreign influences from as far a field as the Middle East, without losing their cultural identity. He proves that the Roman Invasion was a mutually beneficial move, with certain British tribes wanting to hold power over certain areas. He also shows us that in the Dark Ages, the island was inhabited Christianised literate Britons, and the Anglo-Saxon invasion might not have been an invasion afterall, but a changing political balance on the island, which has subsequently re-branded as a violent invasion by foreign forces. This Francis Pryor series helps to re-write the Romanised version of history which we have become accustomed to. Also see Britain BC.
Episode 1: The Roman Invasion 50 mins
Episode 2: The Dark Ages 49 mins
Episode 3: The Anglo-Saxon Invasion 49 mins
Located in the English countryside, a secret UK military division created 'Black' propaganda, and disseminated pornography to German troops, and civilians, illustrating the real/exaggerated sexual perversions of their leaders. This film also attempts to delve into the mythical sex life of Hitler, but only manages to enhance the mysterious nature of his sexploits. Did he enjoy being defecated upon? Did he kill some of his partners?
Documentary questioning whether mummies at a Munich museum, which were found to have very high levels of cocaine, provide proof of early trade routes between Egypt and South America. The findings were criticised because such substances come from the Americas and were supposedly not discovered until thousands of years after the passing of the Egyptian dynasties. Did the ancients snort coke? And were the Americas discovered by the ancients, and subsequently forgotten about until the voyages of Christopher Columbus?
Crime
Aileen Wournas was given the title of the 'World's 1st Female Serial Killer', by the media, when police first caught up with her. The first film above explores the media circus which surrounded this story as it broke, and the second film catches up with her a decade later, with some disturbing interviews with Wournas, prior to dying by the death penalty. Both films which explore this very mixed up woman, are made by Nick Broomfield.
Maxx Ginnane tells the story of three women who have been mistaken for Maxine Carr, and have had their lives ruined by mob-justice. This film also touches, albeit briefly, on what Carr's involvement may have been in the Soham murders of two little girls (Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman), by her then boyfriend, Ian Huntley. For Carr, and those mistaken for her, it appears that guilt, based on gossip, can be presumed.
Nick Broomfield uncovers the conspiracy theories surrounding the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. There is some great interaction with Small's mother, showing him to be a kinder than expected figure, but the most controversial moment of this film is towards the end. Broomfield appears to come to the conclusion that Death Row Records producer, Suge Knight, may have been involved in both deaths.
Matt Rudge's documentary explores what life is like for the family of serial killer Levi Bellfield, as they cope with the aftermath of his sentence - life imprisonment for multiple murders. The kids look back on how abusive their father was, and how fearful they were when his serial murders were causing mayhem locally. Little did they know that it was their own father which they were looking over their shoulders for. This poignant film also hits on how a family can blossom after an abusive parent is taken out of the home.

Based on Naomi Klein's book, The Shock Doctrine argues that America's 'free market' policies now dominate the world through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries. When natural disasters happen, the US military-industrial corporations move in, and enslave entire nations. If you like this film, make sure you also check out the 'Naomi Klein on The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism' speech which we feature.
Richard Dawkins' personal journey through the world's three major single-God religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Dawkins believes that today's major religions have no factual foundation, and that they only serve to prey on peoples desire to belong to something big and spiritual. He also looks at how blind faith is like a virus amongst the younger generations, which are radicalised in some of today's society's by organised religion. And the faith which they are taught to believe in, only helps to stagnate their scientific understanding and moral outlook.
Episode 1: The God Delusion 48 mins
Episode 2: The Virus of Faith 48 mins
