In 1893 Hawaii was an independent nation with it's own constitutional monarchy, 80 foreign embassies in other countries and many friendly treaty's with various nations, including the United States. Then the US decided to invade the island nation and take complete control of it - this was America's first major attempt at regime change. Nowadays, many of the indigenous people cannot afford to rent or buy a home in their own land, and are therefore living homeless on the beaches, well below the poverty line, whilst the island is used by affluent tourists, along with the thousands of military personnel who are stationed at over 150 military installations, making it one of the most militarised places on the planet. This episode of 'Inside USA' deals with the 200 year old native movement for self-determination in Hawaii, which has recently been gaining momentum, and the US governments plans to ban Hawaii natives from living on their own beaches. |
