Produced for Forced Migration Online and Oxford University, this film is mainly comprised of interviews with Uyghur's who have been forced to leave East Turkistan (Xinjiang). One of China's 55 nationalities, Uyghurs are a Turkic-Muslim ethnicity, the majority of whom have been living in East Turkestan for generations. In 1949 they made up 95% of the local population, but they now account for about 50%, due to Chinese settlers. They are said to number over 10 million in total, but any notion of independence is put down with violence by the Chinese government. |
