There is an unreported conflict kicking off in South America. Forests, traditional farming land and natural habitat is being destroyed at an alarming pace, to make way for massive soy farms which are owned by multi national corporations, the most prevalent of whom is Monsanto. This cheaply produced soy is mostly genetically modified (GM), therefore large amounts of pesticides are generally used when planting this type of crop. The GM soy which is produced is then sold mostly to European factory farms to bulk up animals for our meat, but back in South America local tribes have been forced from their lands, due to not having any source of food, with no land made available to feed the local populations. Toxic pesticide contamination is also purposefully used on locals to drive them into the cities. This has resulted in large sections of the South American continent now resembling massive industrial farms, but there is a little light at the end of the tunnel. During the final minutes of this film we get to hear about some possible alternative animal feeds which could be grown within Europe, and the prickly subject of better farming practice is also opened up. |
