2009 was a bad year for refugee numbers. According to the UNHCR, out of a total of over 10 million refugees which they were responsible for during 2009, by the end of the year only 251,500 refugees were repatriated voluntarily, the lowest figure since 1990. In contrast, more than 2.2 million IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) were able to return home, the highest overall number in atleast a decade, but those figures are somewhat skewed, because the number of IDP's reached an historical high in 2009 - 15.6 million people. |
