Awarded by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) at the yearly UEFA Gala, which also features the Champions league draw, held in August in Monaco, the winners are chosen as the 'best performers' amongst the UEFA European competitions in a full league season, including the Champions league and the recently-created Europa League. An overall winner is chosen, along with separate accolades for 'Best Goalkeeper', 'Best Defender', 'Best Midfielder' and 'Best Forward'. A 'Best Coach' award did run from the 1997-8 to the 2005-6 seasons, but it has since been discontinued.
