Awarded in August each year by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) at the UEFA Gala in Monaco - which also features the Champions league draw - the winners are chosen as the 'best performers' amongst the UEFA European competitions in a full league season, including the Champions league and the recently-created Europa League. An overall winner is chosen, along with separate accolades for best Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Forward. The 'Best Coach' award has been discontinued since 2006.
