Stefan Helders has been independently collating data relating to population statistics since 1998 on what is now known as the World Gazetteer website. According to Helders... "If possible, official data sources are used. In many cases however no official figures are available. In that case, secondary sources such as year books, encyclopediae, atlases etc. are used. I have also received data from other stats lovers". Along with another useful population statistics website called CityPopulation.de, Stefan Helders/World Gazetteer provides the most accurate and up-to-date analysis of population levels in the World's cities and metropolitan areas.
