The approved peacekeeping budget for the period covering from July.01.2009 to June.30.2010 is approximately US$7.9bn, with about US$5.7bn of that total being spent on missions which are taking place on the African continent. According to the UN, it's overall global peacekeeping budget represents a paltry 0.5% of the overall global military spending, which they estimate at US$1,464bn. The UN also states that when costs of UN peacekeepers are compared to the costs of troops deployed by the United States, other developed states, NATO or regional organisations, the United Nations is the least expensive option by far. |
