[1] Angola/Cabinda - Cabinda claims independence, but Angola claims sovereignty, and controls it. Cabinda is not recognised by any other states.
[2] Azerbaijan/Nagorno-Karabakh - 'Azerbaijan' is a fully recognised country, but the 'Nagorno-Karabakh' region claims full independence, with no international recognition. A military stalemate is currently in place, with both militaries controlling and occupying areas of each others claimed land.
[3] Channel Islands/Jersey/Guernsey - the 'Channel Islands' are a British Overseas Territory, made up from a group of islands situated just off the coast of France. They are administered separately as the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Bailiwick of Jersey, both of which have their own independent autonomous governments. They are not considered part of the United Kingdom (UK), nor are they officially part of the European Union (EU).
[4] Cyprus/Northern Cyprus - listed above is 'Cyprus (Republic of)' which consists of the majority of the island of Cyprus, with a majority Greek-Cypriot population. Also listed above is 'Northern Cyprus', which is a smaller portion of the island, with a majority Turkish-Cypriot population.
[5] Faroe Islands - the North Atlantic island group, the Faroe Islands, has been an autonomous province of Denmark since 1948. A local Faroese government currently controls most aspects of their own lives, except security and foreign affairs. The local population is split over independence, and islanders are not considered citizens of the European Union, even if they hold Danish passports.
[6] Georgia/Abkhazia/South Ossetia - situated both in Europe and Asia, Georgia has recently ceded the regions of 'Abkhazia' and 'South Ossetia' to the respective independence-seeking populations in both areas. They now both operate individually and independently, with support from Russia.
[7] Gibraltar - this Iberian headland is also claimed by Spain. However, a 2002 referendum of the local population saw 99% vote to remain a British Overseas Territory, with Britain vowing to support their wishes. Gibraltar governs itself almost entirely, and manages it's own security and trade.
[8] Ireland/Northern Ireland - listed above is 'Ireland (Republic of)' which consists of 26 out of the 32 counties on the island of Ireland. The other 6 counties are considered 'Northern Ireland', which itself is considered a part of the 'United Kingdom'. Some people living within Northern Ireland want to remain as part of the UK (known as Loyalists/Unionists), whilst others want to be reunited with the rest of Ireland (known as Nationalists/Republicans).
[9] Kurdistan - there is no listing for Kurdistan above, as the lands of Greater Kurdistan are currently split between the modern-day nations of Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria. Apart from Iraqi Kurdistan to a questionable degree, no parts of Kurdistan enjoy any serious amount of autonomy or independence today.
[10] Moldova/Transnistria - the 'Transnistria' region of 'Moldova' claims independence since 1990, but Moldova continues to govern it, with a military ceasefire in place since 1992. Moldova (with help from the Ukraine) operates a blockade on the Transnistrian population, similar to the Israeli blockade of Gaza, creating great hardship for the people of the area, but it receives almost no international media attention.
[11] Morocco/Western Sahara - Officially known as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), 'Western Sahara' claims independence, but Morocco controls most of it. Recognised by about 50 other countries, Western Sahara currently controls about 20% of the land it claims, and it's government operates from exile in Algeria.
[12] Palestinian Territories/The Gaza Strip/The West Bank/Israel - recognised as a single independent generalised nation, by many United Nations members, the 'Palestinian Territories' may be more appropriate to split into two nations, due to 'The West Bank' and 'The Gaza Strip' both forcefully operating individually in a political and civil sense. Both are totally cut off from the rest of the World, by Israeli military blockade of The Gaza Strip (with help from Egypt), and by the Israeli military occupation and blockade of The West Bank. Various parts of Israel are claimed by different Palestinian factions.
[13] Papua New Guinea/West Papua - situated both in Asia and Oceania, the island of New Guinea was historically a single tribal island nation, with loosely-affiliated tribes, but it is currently split into the independent tribal nation of 'Papua New Guinea', and the Indonesian provinces which make up 'West Papua'. The local population of West Papua would like their own independent tribal nation.
[14] Somalia/Somaliland - Somaliland has operated independently from Somalia since the 1991 Somali government collapse. The region remains in dispute, with Somalia itself allowing a great deal of autonomy to it's own 'Puntland' region. All three factions hold great areas of land and large local support.
[15] Taiwan/China - 'Taiwan' (officially the Republic of China) claims sovereignty over 'China' (officially Peoples Republic of China), and China claims Taiwan. There is an uneasy peace between the two countries, although China has warned of future military action to take back the island by force.
[16] United Kingdom/England/Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland - the undisputed senior partner in the 'United Kingdom' is 'England', hence strong calls for independence come from all of the other countries in the UK. 'Wales', 'Scotland' and 'Northern Ireland' all have their own parliaments, with varying degrees of powers and autonomy. Calls for independence from within Scotland have grown stronger in recent decades, and there remains a balance of power within Northern Ireland from those who seek reunification with the rest of Ireland, and those who don't. Calls for independence in Wales are less prevalent. |
