Nine out of the top ten tallest buildings on the planet are in Asia. Infact, apart from Asian countries, only the United States has buildings included in the current World Top 30. There is a proposed building called the Nakheel Tower, which was due to be built in the United Arab Emirate of Dubai, that would measure an incredible 1,400 metres high (4,600 feet), but it has been on hold for some time, with name changes and location changes taking place over 2008/9. The current record holder, which just opened it's doors on January the 4th 2010, is the Burj Khalifa (formerly known as the Burj Dubai), and it is also in the same emirate of the UAE. It cost US$1.5 billion to build, it towers above all of the other buildings on Earth, and not only is it the biggest building in the World, it is also the tallest structure, the first such time a building has held that title in history. It also has more floors than any other building (160 habitable floors), the fastest lifts/elevators (64 km/h) and will house a mixture of residential apartments, offices and hotel accommodation.

[1] "Official World's 200 Tallest High-rise Buildings" (Emporis.com). This overview is the most accurate compilation of its kind and uses in-depth research results and reliable building information. It is based on data standards as outlined by the Emporis Standards Committe (ESC). This listing is verified and updated continuously and includes high-rise buildings which have been topped out, including those still under construction or on hold. The ranking is based entirely on the buildings' structural height. TV towers, masts, and other building types are not included. NOTE* Number 4 in the chart above - the Hong Kong International Commerce Center - is not yet included in the Emporis chart, but we have included it as it is almost completed. It is due to open it's doors in 2010.
