Press Freedom

Global Issue: Press FreedomIn the recent past, the issue of a lack of press freedom was considered to be a problem only within developing nations, which were often run by dictatorships, or unfair political systems, but nowadays press freedom is an issue for us all. The freedom of the internet has educated us to the fact that many of those dictatorships were actually set up, and managed, by our own western governments, and now they have turned their attention to their own people. Our governments are attempting to clamp down on the very freedom, and lack of censorship, which the internet has awarded to us, with the United States leading this charge to curtail our freedom of expression, and to cut off our widespread access to knowledge. Some ISP’s have been even known to inject malicious java script content that they will use to spy on you – you can take steps to prevent that such as downloading spybot for your computer.

  • Bill Hicks – One Night Stand

Legendary, innovative, shocking, stunning but above all very funny, this is a classic set from the much missed Bill Hicks. Recorded at the Vic Theatre in Chicago in the early 1990s, this set is packed with all of Bill’s favourite themes: rock ‘n’ roll, smoking, advertising, and of course flying saucers – This is one of Hicks’ finest performances before his sad early death.

Recorded as Season 3, Episode 12, of HBO ‘One Night Stand’ series. Broadcasted on 27 April 1991

  • Peter Joseph – Where Are We Now?

TRANSCRIPT of introduction to the speech:
In my experience so far in attempting to promote the ideas of the movement and the Venus Project, I find about 95% of the critics tend to ignore the current state of affairs. And in a detached manner, they simply criticize the abstracts of what our proposed resolutions are. Without ever reflecting on the train of thought, that was employed to reach those solutions. So in response to this, I decided to simply focus on the information which will, at a minimum… …at least further compound the dire need to get away from our current social practises, while also showing the logic that the Venus Project employs to arrive at the conclusions and ideas that they do. We’re not just making things up. Jacque Fresco didn’t just creatively come up with ideas. He has a pivotal train of thought, and it has a near empirical basis. So, first there’s going to be an overview of the movement. The tenets of the Venus Project. And then, part 1 we’re going to elaborate even more so, on the nature of our world monetary system and it’s consequences. While in part 2 we will take a larger step back and consider the human condition, it’s cultivation and the effects of the social system at large.

  • United Nations Universal Declaration Of Human Rights

Eleanor Roosevelt and Human Rights Declaration, November 1949 (image: Unknown, Public Domain)

Subsequent to World War II ending, on the 10th of December 1948 the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights as an instrument which could help to promote freedom and equality, for all citizens, within the many nations of the World.

Whilst it is not a legally binding treaty, it has defined the terms ‘fundamental freedoms’ and ‘human rights’, which UN member states are supposed to uphold, according to the binding Charter of the United Nations.

Nowadays, many UN member states still hold little regard for some of the basic rights which are given to every person within the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights.

  • Bill Hicks – Revelations [The Uncut Version]

    This is the 1993 performance by Bill Hicks at the Dominion Theatre in London, which was given the title of ‘Revelations’. There’s some classic Hick’s moments throughout, including ‘Just A Ride’, and this number about how, during the 1st Gulf War which was waged against Saddam Hussein over Kuwait, George Bush Senior’s military only really served to disarm an army which they had armed for profit in the preceding years;

You know we armed Iraq. I wondered about that too, you know. During the Persian Gulf war, those intelligence reports would come out: “Iraq: incredible weapons – incredible weapons.” “How do you know that?” “Uh, well … we looked at the receipts. But as soon as that check clears, we’re goin’ in. What time’s the bank open? Eight? We’re going in at nine. We’re going in for God and country and democracy and here’s a fetus and he’s a Hitler. Whatever you fucking need, let’s go. Get motivated behind this, let’s go!” Bill Hicks RIP.

This routine was filmed during November 1992, and it was released on 14 September 1993. It may be Hicks’ last ever live appearance on stage in the UK.

    Produced by Bill Hicks

Bill Hicks is a now-deceased standup comic from the United States, who first made a big name for himself on UK tv, then began to do so across America before his untimely death. His routines centered on the dumbed-down media, political repression by western nations, the destructive use of the American military, and environmental and health issues, amongst other areas of interest. He was ahead of his time, and was without doubt the best politicised comedian of recent decades! Bill Hicks died as a result of pancreatic cancer on 26 February 1994, at just 32 years of age. Since his death, through posthumous releases of his routines, he has become even more well-known and respected – website / twitter (both appear to be run by Bill Hicks’ family)

  • Robert Newman – A History Of Oil

Robert Newman gets to grips with the wars and politics of the last hundred years – but rather than adhering to the history we were fed at school, this show places oil centre stage as the cause of all commotion.

This innovative history programme is based around Robert Newman’s stand-up act and supported by resourceful archive sequences and stills with satirical impersonations of historical figures from Mayan priests to Archduke Ferdinand.

    Description via Robert Newman’s website.

The first broadcast date specified above may be inaccurate. This show was originally recorded in 2005 for More4 at London’s Hoxton Hall, and was broadcast on More4 – possibly many times, as is usually the case with that tv station – including on 12 April 2006.

  • Serco – The Biggest Corporation That You Have Never Heard Of

Serco are a UK company who have managed to gain government contracts in a variety of countries, expanding their turnover by 1200% between 1994 and 2009. At the time this film was first broadcasted on ABC, they ran all seven of Australia’s immigration detention centres, some of Australia’s prisons, plus half of London’s traffic lights, all of Dublin’s traffic lights, and Ontario’s driver’s license testing centres. They were the largest air traffic controllers in the World (54 towers in the US alone), and were set to become the largest private operator of prisons in the UK. They ran all of the UK state schools in Bradford, they looked after the UK’s entire nuclear arsenal (from creation to decommissioning) and they even had the contract for setting GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). 85% of Serco’s workforce came from the public service – the very people who would have awarded them the contracts in the first place! There were many more contracts which they had at that stage, and they are sure to have added to that impressive catalogue by now.

  • Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Global Issue: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)Whilst FGM gets little coverage in western media, it is a huge deal in parts of Africa in particular. The total number of girls and women who have undergone the four types of FGM – differentiated by which parts of the vagina are cut or closed – has been estimated at anywhere between 100 and 200 million, with above 70% prevalence rates (girls and women aged 15-49) in 12 nations. Most FGM takes place in Africa, away from the global media spotlight, so we generally continue to ignore this barbaric issue.

Often called Female Genital Cutting (FGC) or Female Circumcision, there are 4 different types of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and they all involve taking a blade to a girls/womans vagina and/or sewing parts of the genital opening closed. This is generally done for customary reasons, but not on religious grounds, as we so often hear in the media, because there are no religious scripts prescribing FGM. Nevertheless, practitioners often believe the practice has religious support, and they may also be heavily reliant on the financial income which FGM brings. In many communities, FGM is believed to reduce a woman’s libido, and thereby is further believed to help her resist ‘illicit’ sexual acts. When a vaginal opening is covered or narrowed, the fear of pain of opening it, and the fear that this will be found out, is expected to further discourage ‘illicit’ sexual intercourse among women with this type of FGM. Along with many commentators, we also believe that FGM is basically used as a means of ‘controlling’ women.

Mostly carried out before a girl reaches the age of 15, and with no associated medical benefits, FGM can cause severe bleeding, bladder complications, repeat infections, and can also lead to childbirth complications and newborn deaths. Whilst undergoing the procedure many girls/women are not given pain relief, and amongst many communities, they are expected to ‘show no pain’. This, adherents say, is one of the coming of age practices which young girls must undertake, and they must do so ‘courageously’. The United Nations is expected to begin a massive push across Africa, and throughout the World, in 2011, in an attempt to bring an end to this practice. Waking the World up to FGM’s consequences, and publicising it’s sheer scope amongst the World’s female population, will be a good place to start.

  • From Caliban to the Taliban: 500 Years of Humanitarian Intervention

From Caliban To The Taliban – 500 Years Of Humanitarian Intervention, is a tale of capitalist expansion down through the ages, coupled with America’s global terror campaign waged “with goodwill to all”.

Newman begins by addressing the invasion of Iraq, and explains how the US administration set the tone for media reporting throughout the war, and how a picture of an aggressive defence, by the Iraqi military, was really just a shroud for the dropping of cluster bombs on Iraqi civilians.

He then travels back in time and covers many periods in history, and manages to bring it all together into a complete storyline, which reeks of propaganda throughout the ages.

Imperialism has always been the World’s worst enemy, yet most of us never seem to see it in action, even when it is ongoing right before our eyes. Newman is one who can help to wake us up though.
