The Chilean state has jailed over 70 Mapuche political prisoners, including Pascual Pichun Collonao, who works as a journalist, and is the son of a village leader. This indigenous people, who are mostly based in Chile, with some also living across the modern-day Chile-Argentine border, have fought multinational corporations over their vicious takeover of much of the countryside environment in the Mapuche's natural habitat. A campaign of intimidation and false allegations has been undertook by the corporations, with support from the Chilean government who utilise laws which were introduced by Pinochet. This policy has lead to what some would describe as an ethnocide against the local indigenous people. |
