A robot butler is programmed to map out it's environment independently, which it does to some extent, proving this kind of technology could be dangerous in the wrong hands. One of the ways it is programmed to work out it's surroundings, is to recognise standard objects and match those objects to the type of room they are usually found in. This months NEW SCIENTIST TV also looks at a company which has developed technology which can extract oil from sunken ships, a problem that is becoming more dangerous over time, as the numbers of sunken ships builds, and as their hull's age and break down in the water. Finally there is a report on some young scientists from Stanford University who have come up with a program which creates movement on an online avatar, based on the tone of your voice. |
