In preparation for the December 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, the United Nations Development Project (UNDP) produced a film about the reality of climate change for the independent Pacific island nation of Kiribati - a vast collection of low-lying islands, with a population of about 100,000. We get to see how the daily lives of islanders has been affected by the rising sea levels - all of whom live within 1km of the coast. Whether rising tides, fuelled by climate change, are a man-induced problem through pollution, or if this is a natural rise in the global temperature, one thing is clear; many coastal people, on many low-lying nations around the globe, are in a dire situation, and may eventually need to be re-housed at another location. The president of Kiribati speaks throughout this film about that particular prickly subject. |
