Ryszard Siwiec was a Polish accountant/teacher/former soldier who committed suicide by self-immolation - by setting himself on fire - in front of 100,000 people, foreign diplomats and the Communist Party leadership at a propaganda rally in Warsaw, in protest against the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, East Germany, Hungary and Poland. The father of five left a letter explaining his actions, along with an audio statement which is included in this short emotional film, and he chose the 'Harvest Festival' at the 10th-Anniversary Stadium to set himself alight. His mission was completed four days later in a nearby hospital, where he died due to his burns. His story was suppressed for some time, but in recent years this audio and video footage has emerged, and this Polish hero of the 'Prague Spring' will always be remembered as a man with a very deep, but fatal conviction. |
