In June 2009, on the 42nd anniversary of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, survivors demand accountability and the truth about this unprovoked massacre by the Israeli's. Nearby US navy ships were told to stand down, and not to defend the USS Liberty, whilst it was coming under sustained Israeli bombing. 34 American's were eventually killed, with almost 200 wounded, some very badly indeed. The belief of these survivors is that Israel's influence allowed them to control the situation by stopping the US government from sending help, and from being honest about the events of that day for many decades. Instead, successive US administrations have followed the Israeli line, suggesting that this was an 'Arab Attack'.
